Sulfites: The Harmful Hidden Ingedient
Sulfites are a preservative found in many different types of food and drink. In our office, we see sulfite sensitivities quite frequently, and most of the time, the patients have never even heard of sulfites, much less actively tried to avoid them. If you have a sensitivity to sulfites, consuming them can lead to symptoms such as migraines, headaches, upset stomach, heartburn, intestinal pain, anxiety, and depression. Even if you do not have a sulfite sensitivity, a buildup of sulfites can lead to disease and dysfunction in the body.
In order to avoid consuming these damaging chemicals, it is always important to read labels to make sure “sulfites” or any derivative of sulfites is not listed on the package. You should also be wary of “natural flavors” when listed as an ingredient as well because, technically, sulfites are a “natural” product and can legally be covered by the “natural flavors” name. Following are some common derivatives of sulfites, where they are commonly found, and some alternatives you can use in order to lead a healthier, cleaner life!
